A few weeks
after school got out I went to Rome, Italy with a Trinity summer study away
program. While I was in Rome I studied art conservation. The course entailed
going to famous museums and meeting with professional art conservators to hear
about their experiences with their work. I really enjoyed the course and all
the opportunities it provided me. I was only in Rome for three weeks and I
felt that the trip flew by. I really tried to take advantage of my location and
see all of the monuments, fountains, churches and museums that I could. My
favorite site that I visited in Rome was St. Peter’s underground tomb,
underneath St. Peter’s Basilica. It was an amazing place to visit and be able
to walk through the original structure. The first weekend in Italy a group of
us from the program went to Florence. I found it to be a very different city
from Rome, in the sense that it was smaller and more centralized. While I was in
Florence I went to go see Michelangelo’s David. This was a beautiful statue to
see in person and really took over the space with its grandeur. In addition,
every restaurant and café we ate at had such delicious food and had a wonderful
environment to enjoy it in. Some of my most memorable memories from the trip
are the experiences I shared with the other students on the program while in
Rome.
