Behind The Numbers: A Look at Trinity's Record Setting Season
Record setting 400 Medley Relay Team - From L-R: Kelley, Yanagisawa, Ma, Celestin |
The
men's and women's swimming and diving
teams concluded their seasons after the NCAA Regional Qualifying Diving
Meet this past weekend at Springfield College. With the last bit of
competition behind them the team now has a chance to reflect on one of the best seasons in Trinity College Swimming & Diving
history. Check out the statistics below:
Overall, 87% of the Bantam swimmers and divers swam or dove a lifetime best time or score,
and 90% swam a collegiate best time or score at the 2013 NESCAC Championship Meet. Of the team's combined 29 swimmers and divers, 26 team members had at least
one lifetime best time at the 2013 NESCAC Championship meet, and those are just the stats from champs.

While
the men and women both had phenomenal championships they also had
phenomenal regular seasons leading up to Champs. Both teams combined to set 19 New Varsity Records by way of 36 record setting performances. Many records were lowered multiple times throughout the season. This year's rookie class combined to establish 7 new First Year records by way of 21 record setting swims. While the Bantams had an impressive number of new records they also had 4 NCAA B-Cut performances. Nick Celestin earned cuts in the 100 backstroke (51.65) and 200 butterfly (1:51.95), while Emily Johnson earned cuts on both the 1-meter (408.70) and 3-meter (440.75) boards.
The Bantams totaled over 100 Personal Best, and Collegiate Best times this season! One of the biggest success stories of the season was Nick Celestin's 200 butterfly. Entering college Celestin's personal best time in the 200 butterfly was 1:57.10. By the end of the season he had shed over five seconds for a time of 1:51.95. His accomplishments in the 200 fly are made even more impressive by the fact that he also swam personal bests in the 50 & 100 back, the 50, 100 fly, the 100, 200, and 500 free, and the 100 and 400IM. Finding similar success as a Bantam is Sophomore Audrey Butler. She entered college with a best time in the 200 breast of 2:43.27. At NESCAC Champs this year she had lowered her personal best to a 2:28.11, for a 15.16 second drop in the 200 in her first two years at Trinity. Mark Yanagisawa has also made dramatic improvements during his time at Trinity. In his first three seasons he has dropped 8 seconds in his 200 butterfly, swimming a 1:55.36 at this years champs, and 17 seconds in his 400IM, swimming a 4:15.30 this season. First Year Katie Barlok saw dramatic time drops en route to establishing new first year marks in the 100 and 200 back this season. She dropped over three seconds in both events for times of 1:01.96 and 2:15.00. With only five seniors graduating the Bantams are looking to build on this years many successes. The team already has one of the strongest incoming classes in school history joining the team next fall, and should add several more to that group in Regular Decision admissions. With all the returning and new talent, next year should be even more amazing. Congrats on an incredible season Bants, we can't wait for next fall!

The Women's Swimming & Diving team earned their highest GPA in team history this fall. Led by four senior women who had an average GPA of just over 3.9, the team had a semester average of 3.51. That GPA ranks them 10th among all division 3 swimming and diving teams. Congrats on a great year in the pool and in the classroom!
